Santiago de los Caballeros

Santiago de los Caballeros City

Santiago is the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic and stands as the cultural and industrial center of the region. Here you will find excellent hotels, good restaurants, and museums, and have the opportunity to learn about some of the most powerful industries of rum, tobacco, and coffee but you won’t generally find a large number of tourists here. As a commercial center, it is more likely to appeal to purchasers who intend to work or undertake business opportunities in the city. Having said that for buyers not so keen on a beachside home the city is steeped in history and offers excellent educational facilities and universities.

History

The history of this city begins in 1495, when Christopher Columbus’s brother, Bartholomew, founded it. In 1562, a huge earthquake destroyed it almost completely, which led its inhabitants to change the location to where it is today (near the Yaque del Norte River). Centuries later, it was devastated by the Civil War, but later the city prospered a lot thanks to a shortage of products such as tobacco, cocoa, and coffee in other countries. Santiago took the opportunity to commercialize them on a large scale and now, the main drivers of the economy are still based on agriculture and industrial businesses that are generated from it.

Santiago has many interesting places to visit and enjoy as well as cultural attractions.  Among the most important museums and monuments, you will find are Don Tomás Morel Folk Museum, the House of Arts, the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration of the Republic as well as the  San Luis Fortress.

And we cannot fail to mention that Santiago de los Caballeros has the biggest baseball stadium in the Dominican Republic, El Cibao Stadium, where the baseball team Caribbean Eagles (Las Águilas Caribeñas) play.

Santigo Real Estate

There is a very wide range of properties for sale both in the city itself or in the smaller towns and villages that surround it.  Villas, condos, townhouses, commercial premises, and businesses.
